There are a lot of things we focus on when trying to grow a sourdough micro bakery.
Better recipes
New products
Upgraded equipment
More content
But what if one of the most powerful marketing strategies you could use… is something you already have?
In this post, I want to share a simple, practical shift that has been working incredibly well in my own bakery.
It’s not complicated.It doesn’t require more time.And it doesn’t cost anything.
But it has the power to turn first-time customers into loyal regulars.
Why People Come Back (And It’s Not Just the Bread)
Before we talk strategy, I want you to think about this.
What is your favorite local place?
A coffee shop
A farm stand
A small boutique
Now ask yourself:
Why do you go back?
Yes, the product matters.
But most of the time, it’s something deeper.
You feel welcomed
You feel known
You feel comfortable
You might even go out of your way to get there.
You might pay more.
Because the experience feels different.
That is what we are building.
The Science Behind Feeling “Known”
There’s a reason this matters so much.
When someone hears their own name, it activates a unique response in the brain.
It signals:
Safety
Belonging
Recognition
And that feeling gets tied to the place where it happened.
So your customer doesn’t just remember the bread.
They remember how they felt picking it up.
And they want to come back for that.
Your Unfair Advantage as a Micro Bakery
We talk a lot about the challenges of being small.
Limited production
Tight margins
Doing everything yourself
But being small also gives you something powerful.
Connection.
Big grocery stores cannot:
Learn customer names
Remember orders
Build personal relationships
Their systems are built for volume.
Yours can be built for people.
And that is your advantage.
The Strategy: Learn Your Customers’ Names
This is it.
The strategy that has been working so well:
Learn your customers’ names.
It sounds simple.
Because it is.
But it is also incredibly underused.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
This is not about being perfect.
It’s about being intentional.
Here’s how it works in my bakery:
When Someone Arrives
If they’re new:
Ask if it’s their first time
Ask how they found you
Introduce yourself
Ask their name
If they’ve been before:
Ask their name again if needed
Keep it light and natural
How to Remember Names
If you struggle with names (I do too), try this:
Look at their name on the order
Repeat it back to them
Ask one simple question about them
Examples:
“Are you local?”
“What brought you in today?”
“Who are you picking this up for?”
Then:
Give yourself permission to need 2–4 interactions to remember
You don’t have to get it perfect on the first try.
Small Changes That Make a Big Impact
These little shifts change the entire tone of the interaction.
Greeting
Instead of:
“Hi, how can I help you?”
Try:
“Welcome in”
“Good to see you again”
This moves from transactional to relational.
During Pickup
Use their name if you know it
Ask one small follow-up question
Examples:
“How did your family like the cinnamon rolls?”
“What did you end up putting on that pizza crust?”
Closing the Interaction
Instead of:
“Bye” or “Thank you”
Try:
“See you next time”
It subtly communicates:
You belong here.You’re coming back.
How to Take This a Step Further
You don’t need a complicated system.
But if you want to deepen this:
Keep Simple Notes
Use:
A notes app
Your ordering platform (like Simply Bread)
Track small details:
Favorite products
Family notes
Preferences
Examples:
Orders cinnamon rolls weekly
Has three kids
Prefers darker loaves
These notes help you:
Personalize future interactions
Build real connection
Why This Works (Better Than Most Marketing)
Customers today are used to being invisible.
Self-checkout
Fast transactions
No conversation
So when you:
Say their name
Remember something about them
Greet them warmly
It stands out immediately.
And it builds something much deeper than a sale.
From Customers to Community
When someone feels known, they don’t just return.
They:
Tell their friends
Bring others with them
Talk about your bakery organically
This is word-of-mouth at its best.
It sounds like:
“You have to try this place”
“She knows everyone’s name”
“It just feels different there”
And that kind of marketing cannot be manufactured.
What You’re Really Building
You are not just building a customer list.
You are building:
A community
A sense of belonging
A place people feel connected to
That is what creates:
Consistent returning customers
Sustainable growth
A business that feels meaningful to run
How to Apply This Anywhere
You don’t need a storefront to do this.
Porch Pickup
Greet them
Ask their name
Make a quick connection
Farmers Markets
Ask if it’s their first time
Introduce yourself
Learn their name
Pre-Orders
Use their name at pickup
Add a note for next time
This works in every format.
Your Homework This Week
Keep it simple.
Try this:
Learn 1–3 customer names this week
Use their name during pickup
Write down one small detail about them
That’s it.
Start small.
Build from there.
Final Thoughts: You Already Have What You Need
You do not need:
A new marketing strategy
A bigger following
More content
You already have the tools.
Your presence
Your proximity
Your ability to connect
This is your unfair advantage.
And when you use it intentionally, it changes everything.
